What Makes Tobacco Road Brewing Different?

Our Beer

Community. That is our motivation. We strive to brew beer not only for our neighbors, but with our neighbors. We aim to source local ingredients as often as possible and actively work with and support our fellow North Carolina brewers. Conquering the beer world is not our intention; brewing the best beer for the local community is our number one priority.

Tobacco Road Brewing opened its doors in the historic powerhouse building in December of 2016 and officially started brewing in August of 2017. Chris brought his brewing expertise to us and shaped this space with his creative beer recipes and love for the local and craft community.

Being in the heart of craft beer country, we couldn’t resist being a part of this exciting and booming industry. Our brewery location crafts top of the line beer, using local ingredients as often as we can, whether that comes from our local malt company or fruit from farmer’s markets.

You won’t find our beers across the world because brewing for our community is our priority. Outside of our brewery, you can find our beers on tap at our Durham and Chapel Hill locations.

Head Brewer Chris Atkins

Meet our head brewer, Chris! Before joining us at Tobacco Road Brewing, Chris studied at The Siebel Institute in Chicago, and later in Doemens Academy in Munich, Germany. He completed an International Diploma in Brewing program before returning to the United States, where he put those skills to the test for the next six years at Top of the Hill Restaurant and Brewery, four years which were spent as the co-head brewer.

Chris’ international and local craft beer knowledge brings a unique perspective to Tobacco Road Brewing, and we’re confident you’ll taste that in his beers.

Currently On Tap

Jones St. Wheat

Belgian Wit - ABV: 4.8% IBU: low

Named for the street in downtown Raleigh our brewery is located on. A Belgian-Style wheat beer brewed Wheat, Oats, and Foundation malt, hopped with Hallertau and accented with orange peel, lemon peel, coriander, and black pepper and traditional Wit yeast. This beer is hazy in appearance with citrus aromas of lemon and orange, with an easy to drink smoothness from the wheat and a bright citrus finish.

Brightleaf IPA

American IPA - ABV: 6.4% IBU: moderate

The name of this IPA is inspired both a North Carolina tobacco varietal and a popular district in Durham. Light orange in color, this IPA has a rich tropical fruit aroma from the use of Warrior, Centennial, El Dorado, and Cascade hops. The flavor is citrus forward with a medium body and a slightly resinous finish.

Perique Pilsner

Pilsner - ABV: 4.8% IBU: moderate

Perique Tobacco is processed by fermentation under pressure. This Pilsner is also fermented in a pressurized environment to keep the flavor as clean and refreshing as possible. Light in color and body while still full flavored.

Old Fox Amber Ale

Amber - ABV: 5.2% IBU: Low

A malt forward Amber Ale named for the Red and Gray Foxes that live through out North Carolina. Old Fox Amber is brewed with Epiphany Foundation, Vienna, and Caramel malts for notes of bread, toffee, and subtle sweetness which balance with pine, spice and earthy flavors from Warrior, Hallertau, and Chinook hops.

Nightshade Stout

Coffee Stout - ABV: 7.3% IBU: Low

Brewed with Foundation, Ruby, Chocolate, Aromatic malt as well as Oats. The addition of Five Star Roaster Coffee and Videri Chocolate creates a rich but drinkable stout. The beer pours black with ruby at the edges. The aroma is highlighted by dark chocolate. The flavor features semisweet chocolate fading into a black coffee and finishing with a very subtle fruity hop note.

King Charles Coffee IPA

American India pale ale - ABV: 6.7% IBU: Medium

Our Brightleaf IPA infused with custom roasted beans from five star roasters. This addition adds aroma and flavor of coffee, dark chocolate, and caramel to the citrus, tropical fruit, and pine of the IPA.

Truth Serum Pale Ale

American Amber / Red Ale - ABV: 5.0% IBU: Low

The truth is, we wanted to craft an easy drinking lager. Using a little practiced technique during fermentation, we were able to create this faux-lager using Mandarina hops for a tangerine flavor pressure fermented for a crisp, clean finish.

Chai Tea Amber

Spiced Amber - ABV: 5.1% IBU: Low

Starting with our Old Fox Amber as our base, we infused this beer with black tea and 8 carefully chosen spices including cinnamon, ginger, and coriander. A refreshing but complex creation for beer drinkers and tea drinkers alike

Whoa Blackberry Gose

Sour - ABV: 4.2% IBU: Low

Kettle soured and brewed with Coriander and Sea Salt for a tart and refreshing flavor then finished with blackberries for a fruity drinkable balance and bright red appearance.

The Fuzz

Sour Peach Pale Ale - ABV: 5.5% IBU: Medium

An American kettle sour brewed and dry hopped with Mosaic hops and finished peach and apricot. The result is a bright tart beer with a fruity aroma and flavor.
